About the opportunity
Sierra Studio is recruiting a Senior Engineer (AI / Robotics / R&D) on behalf of a mission-driven technology startup transforming in-home care.
The company's platform unifies signals from cameras, sensors, wearables, and connected devices to turn raw data into secure, real-time insights and closed-loop care actions.
This is a hands-on, first in-house engineering role based on-site in Culver City, CA.
You will write code daily, build prototypes, integrate systems, and conduct R&D experiments.
Key responsibilities
- Build production and prototype code across the stack, stand up MVPs and working demos fast, and ship integrations with devices, sensors, and third-party services.
- Build internal tools and lightweight automation for a small team.
- Take open technical questions regarding new models, hardware, and open-source components and run end-to-end experiments to deliver working evidence.
- Experiment hands-on with robotics, including working directly with humanoid hardware on-site.
- Evaluate build versus buy versus integrate decisions and defend the answers.
- Serve as the technical voice in the room, answering day-to-day technical questions from the CEO and business side without a translation layer.
- Give leadership honest reads on feasibility, effort, and risk, push back on scope creep, and support technical narratives for decks and funding rounds.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of professional software building experience with a track record of shipping products used by real people.
- Strong hands-on engineering skills with comfort across the stack and depth in specific areas.
- Practical AI/ML fluency with experience building using LLMs, speech, or perception systems and understanding their failure modes.
- Experience taking a product from zero to a working first version in environments with incomplete information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to bridge technical execution and business stakeholders.
- High autonomy and ownership to define weekly priorities without a groomed backlog.
- Strong testing and QA discipline, writing solid tests and validating AI and hardware features.
- Based in the Los Angeles area or willing to relocate, able to work on-site in Culver City, CA, and authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship.
Nice to have
- Experience with robotics, humanoids, embodied AI, IoT, or connected devices.
- Comfort with hardware-adjacent work including edge deployment, audio pipelines, sensors, and on-device inference.
- Experience working alongside distributed engineering teams.
- Early-stage startup background.
- Product instinct with strong opinions on what should be built.
Benefits
- Base salary ranging from $180,000 to $360,000 dependent on experience (DOE).
- Equity package.
